Better on Paper

Everything I see eventually becomes a poem

The decline

Your face looked the same,

But your eyes stared right through me.

The thumb I used to nibble on,

was now full of calluses.

The smile that was reserved for me only,

now a memory as your lips formed a straight line.

I still tried to gather the nonexistent remnants,

struggling as my plastered smile began to fall.

With you not by my side,

my morning sun ceased to rise.

The dew turned to floods

That dared to smudge the rouge on my lips

The feeling like a slap or a kiss

The clatter of my life

Struggling to not capsize

With you not in it.
